About Me

As you probably already know, my name is Ian Adams. I cannot start this Biography saying I've been playing with and taking apart computers since I was 3 months old or anything like that. The only thing I was taking apart and putting together were Legos and Erector Sets. We had a computer for as far back as I can remember. I know we didnt have one when I was real young, but then again, I dont remember too much then anyways. If i had to guess, our first computer came when I was around the age of 6 or 7. The only thing I used it for was Paint, Word, and the occasional game. Im assuming we had Internet, I do remember not being able to use it for long because it would shut off the phone, but I don't remember much about the early days of my experiences with the internet. The only other thing I remember about our first computer was it ran on Windows 95.

To continue on with my early experiences with computers, I do remember using them in school, as early as elementary school. I was in an Advanced Class when i was in Primary School (grades K-2) and we got to use learning programs on Computers. I also remember playing learning games in the Library, as well as playing games and doing work in Computer Class, which we saved our work on Floppy Disks. I'm pretty sure I still have it somewhere, maybe.

Middle School would be the next leap in importance in my life. It would not be notable for computers. I know I had a computer class, but i remember nothing except we used the Macintosh computers that actually kind of looked like apples. I mention Middle School because from it arose the other passion in my life besides Computers, and that is Sports, Football and Wrestling.

Which brings us to High School. Football ended for me after my Freshman Year due to lack of interest. Wrestling However stuck with me all the way through to my Senior Year and even for the next couple of years after. I had helped with the Middle School and Peewee Programs even while still in High School, but even when I graduated in 2009, I helped the following year by being an Assistant Coach for the High School team. I personally was nothing great of a wrestler. I knew what I was doing, I was very good at coaching others, and I ended my career with a winning record, but I have no amazing accomplishments from the sport such as State Champion or anything, But my love and passion for the sport remained nonetheless, and to this day I still say, "If i can survive Wrestling, I can survive anything."

Thus we enter College. I always knew I was going to college, never really assumed otherwise, but even upon Graduation of High School, I had no idea where I was going or what I was going to due, which luckily led me to Southern Maine Community College, because its cheap, easy to get into, close to where I live, and still a great place to get an education. But I still went in with no clue as to what I wanted. In High School I had switched my interest a few times, from Marine Biology to Accounting, to Teaching Science, and in the end, thats actually what I chose to do. My first year at School was for Liberal Arts, to become a teacher, but one day it hit me, I did not want to become a Teacher for the rest of my life. I might enjoy it for a bit, but a Teaching Degree is only good for that, and useless otherwise. One day I was talking to a friend who had just built a computer. Everything he was telling me was so interesting, that I started looking into it to build myself one. Researching about computers, their parts, how they work, how to build them, and etc, was so interesting to me that I decided to give Computer Technology a shot. I knew absolutely nothing going into this Major, I alway said "the most complex thing I could do was Set my Desktop Background".

Finally that brings us to today, where I am a Senior at SMCC striving for a Computer Technoligy degree. Currently I work in a resturant, which has been my scene of employment for the last 6 years or so. I've done other things like stocking shelves third shift, and I worked with my Dad installing Hardwood Floors for a couple of years too, but none of those things were my calling so to speak. While I am nearing completion of my major, I have learned so much about computers and the IT field, but this has only led to confusion amongst myself, as I'm still not sure if this is what I want to do.  Some things interest me about computers, like the Hardware. Other Things like Web Design and Coding also interest me (though I'll be the first to admit that I suck at Coding), but then there are things like Server Management and whatnot, stuff that defines what it really means to be an IT, that I find boring, and upon finishing those classes, is what left me unsure of what I want. Nevertheless I strive to finish this goal in life, even if in the end it ends up being only a mark on my Resume.

Though one job has recently revealed itself to me, and while it may not be considered an IT job, it is still working with computers. My Dad has been a trucker (18-Wheelers) for the last 5 years or so. Recently he bought a second truck, is on his way to buying a third, and has a goal of owning 4-6 trucks. As he gets more trucks, the paper work increases. When it was just him, he did everything by hand, but now that the workload has increased, that has become not only more work (obviously) but almost impossible to do it all. Which is where I come in. I, being much better with computers then my dad (who I would say is only just getting the hang of their most basic functions), am a perfect candidate to handle such a workload on the computer. At the moment, I handle some basic tasks such as Scanning and Faxing paperwork, as well as keeping track of Invoices. In addition to the paper work, I've also made several Excel Spreadsheets to handle Accounts Receivable/Payable and Expenses. All of which may eventually be converted into a Database, but that has yet to be determined. In the future, my Dad wants to officially hire me full time to do all this work (as opposed to doing it in my free time for free as of now), as well as handle load confirmations and dispatches and other things. While none of this is official IT stuff, It would be a huge opportunity for me. Working from Home, getting paid, and working with my Dad sounds like the perfect job to me. And that is where I stand today.
